Here's some great advice from my good friend and partner in the studio, Chris Defeo, on how to keep your guitar in good condition:

1. Maintenance

For as long as you own your guitar, it should be properly inspected and adjusted by a professional luthier/guitar technician. At least once a year, your guitar should have its frets, intonation, and hardware examined, and the respective adjustments should be made.

2. Storage

Always store your instrument in its case away from heat ducts, windows, air conditioners, and places it could get wet. Try to keep it in a temperature-controlled room that isn’t too hot or too cold, too dry or too humid. If you own an acoustic guitar, use a humidifier for your case.

3. Accessories

Strings and cables make a difference; the cheapest ones will not give you the best results. Although it’s not necessary to spend a fortune, always invest in quality strings to get the most out of your guitar's tone. Longer cables tend to lose more sound quality.

You can hear Chris' guitar work in our ambient electronica project Checking and in his ambient jazz project Petrichor.
