I usually start the songwriting process with a guitar in my lap, but by the time I've worked out a song's structure, I'm ready to jump into my DAW. Here are 6 rules I follow for maximum efficiency in the studio:
1. Stay organized. a. Name your tracks accordingly. b. Group similar instruments together.
c. Color code your session.
d. Use a template.
2. Choose a tempo early on, use a click track, and quantize.
3. Use scratch tracks and software instruments as placeholders.
4. Keep clips broken up.
5. Mute and keep clips you haven’t used until you’re sure you don’t need them.
6. Write down parts you plan to re-record, or film your performance.
